Founded in 1934 by future Baltimore mayor, Theodore R. McKeldin, Santa Claus Anonymous is a unique volunteer non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization. Each year, keenly aware of the thousands of children in the Baltimore metropolitan area who go without presents at holiday time, we raise money to give every child a Christmas.
And there are many children to help. In 1934, we raised $800 for Christmas distribution. This year, our goal is close to $300,000. The way that we will reach that goal is with dedication, cooperation and a belief in the spirit of Christmas.
Bear in mind that except for one paid staff person, Santa Claus Anonymous programs are planned, organized and carried out 100% by volunteers. From organizing golf tournaments and gala auctions to tracking and recording donations, volunteers make it happen. That’s dedication.
As for cooperation, we partner with the Department of Social Services or its equivalent in Baltimore City and seven neighboring counties – Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Harford, Howard and Fredrick – to accurately identify eligible recipients and distribute gift certificates for them.
Our other partners are the retail merchants (more below) who honor the certificates [for children’s merchandise only] and then discount their bill to Santa Claus Anonymous when it’s time for reimbursement. This successful three-way cooperation assures that gift certificates go to children who truly deserve them and that we maximize the buying power of every dollar we raise.
Finally, there’s the wonderful intangible of the Christmas spirit – the open hearted, caring, anonymous gift that shares the joy of giving with others.
Belief in that spirit is why our holiday funding takes the form of gift certificates sent directly to eligible children’s parents. In turn, they use the certificates to buy games, books, toys or clothing. Parents and children share the joy of giving and the precious preservation of dignity and self respect.
At Santa Claus Anonymous, we value this truly unselfish expression of the holiday spirit. It is an honor and privilege to help assure its success. We welcome the volunteer participation and financial support of all who share than vision – to give every child a Christmas.
